Individuals who already have coverage are able to stay on their current health insurance plan if they choose. Beginning in 2014, they will also have the option of switching plans and buying coverage through the state-run insurance exchange, where insurance plans may be more affordable for individuals and families.
Provisions that Help Improve Your Existing Insurance Coverage
By September 2010, insurance companies will be banned from certain practices such as cancelling an individual’s coverage in the event of an illness or placing an annual or lifetime cap on coverage benefits. Insurance companies must also allow dependents under the age of 26 to remain on their parents’ policies.
If you decide to switch your plan or change carriers, new policies will have to meet certain minimum benefit standards that may differ from your current plan.
