Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) operates nationwide as an HMO. In Alabama, Blue Cross Blue Shield is an independent licensee of the nationwide Association. With over 3.7 million members, as of 2007, BCBS of Alabama is the state's largest health insurance provider.

Alabama's BCBS plans include individual, family, and group health insurance options and represents over 30,000 companies in the state as their official health plan provider.

Alabama BCBS and the Community

In 1987, BCBS of Alabama also became intimately involved with local Alabama communities by establishing the Alabama Child Caring Foundation, which helps provide much needed medical care to the state's numerous uninsured children.
