Another Health Insurance Statistic

It’s been all over the news today – the U.S. Census Bureau has reported that more Americans are without health insurance than ever before. The statistics are staggering: between 2005 and 2006, the number of uninsured increased from 44.8 million to 47 million. That’s 2.2 million more people going without adequate health insurance coverage in the United States.

What is happening? Why are more and more people choosing to take the risk of going uninsured? It seems that employee benefits are becoming more and more expensive, and many people who are employed full-time feel that they simply cannot afford health insurance.

It’s strange, isn’t it? In an era when people are becoming increasingly aware of their health, when patients are taking more and more control with online tools such as WebMd and PatientsLikeMe, getting adequate, affordable health insurance coverage is becoming increasingly difficult for most Americans. It’s time to take control of our health insurance coverage, too.

What can you do? If you have a health insurance plan, check it to make sure it’s actually what you want and need. If your employee benefits package is too expensive for you, don’t be afraid to look elsewhere. The theory of privatized healthcare is that competition will keep costs low and healthcare efficient. So far it’s not working. So let’s make them compete a little bit harder.

America, you do have options, you just have to take advantage of them. You should be making health insurance providers compete for your business!

You don’t have to become just another health insurance statistic. We should be fighting back by making conscious decisions about our health insurance.
