The Health Care Reform laws are complex, dense, and too long for the average American to read. It’s easy to see why some miss important details. Sure, the health insurance exchange, insurance for all, and care for even those with preexisting conditions are all important. However, this law also contains some important (but lesser-known) changes to health care that will affect almost every American.
Seven Health Care Reform Promises
Health care reform promises to introduce the following solutions to current medical care problems:
- Premium Hike Regulation: Premium increases will be fully justified and deemed reasonable before they are approved.
- Keeping People Healthy: Preventative tests like breast cancer screenings, immunizations, and blood tests for cholesterol will no longer have any co pay.
- Better Care For the Poor and Elderly: Integrated care offers better coverage to those who typically receive poor medical care.
- Affordable Coverage For Those Who Are Currently Ineligible for Medicaid: Those within 133% of poverty, including childless adults, will now be eligible for Medicaid.
- Start With the Best Treatment First: “Comparative Effectiveness Research” will determine which treatment methods are most effective. These determinations will drive the treatments offered to patients thereby increasing treatment success rates.
- Expand Generic Drugs to Major Treatments: Generic versions of cancer treatments and other biological drugs can be approved by the FDA. Lower cost treatment will be available to those who cannot afford brand name treatments.
- Close The Gap In Elderly Health Care: Until the health insurance exchange opens, retirees over 55 who are not yet eligible for Medicare will receive assistance with medical insurance coverage.
While the above measures may not revolutionize the health care industry, they do address some of the issues facing many Americans. Those who do not currently receive the care they need stand to benefit from these 7 simple changes.
