Illinois Health Plans for Families (IL)
Health insurance can be obtained one of two ways; it can be provided by your place of employment or it can be purchased from a licensed insurance carrier. The type of insurance employers provide is called group health insurance, and can be either a HMO, PPO, POS or HSA.
Generally you will be given an option, and based on your financial status and preferences you can choose the plan that suits you best. When it comes to group health care policies, one generally cannot be denied coverage due to their health status.
The other option is individual health coverage, and it can be purchased from a private insurance carrier. Individual health insurance can be a bit more costly than a group plan, but still will provide the quality care you are looking for your family to get. Keep in mind though, that in most cases the law does not limit how much the insurance company can charge you for individual health insurance. So if you have a history of health conditions and are having trouble finding an affordable health, you may want to try to find a job which offers group health care.
Individual Health Care Policies in Illinois (IL)
As an individual, the same two forms of insurance apply to you as with a family plan; group health policies or individual health policies. If your work offers a group health plan, that would probably be your best option, and you will have to decide if a HMO or PPO (or POS or HSA) are a better fit for you. If your work does not offer a group health plan or if you are unemployed or self employed, you will need to seek out an individual health care plan to fit your needs.

Illinois State Health Plans
If you have low or modest household income, you may be eligible for free or subsidized health coverage for yourself or members of your family. The Illinois Medicaid program offers free or subsidized health coverage for pregnant women, families with children, elderly, and disabled individuals with very low incomes. In addition, some women who are diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer might be able to receive medical care through Medicaid. If your children are 18 years old or younger and meet certain financial qualifications, you may be able to buy insurance for them or receive assistance paying for private health insurance through the Illinois KidCare Program
Difficulties in Obtaining Health Insurance in Illinois (IL)
You have a very good option in Illinois if you have been denied coverage from an individual health care policy. The Illinois Comprehensive Health Insurance Plan (CHIP) is a state health benefits program that is funded both by premiums, and by the State of Illinois. This plan is for individuals who have been denied coverage by traditional companies, and have been deemed “high-risk.” The Illinois CHIP provides benefits through Blue Cross Blue Shield Preferred Providers, and is intended for people who have been rejected due to pre-existing conditions, or due to having one of the 31 conditions labeled as “presumptive medical conditions” that result in automatic rejection by insurance companies. You can even obtain this plan if you find a private high-risk insurance plan that is going to cost you substantially more than the Illinois CHIP. However, there is a limit to the number of Illinois residents who can be covered under CHIP, so be sure that you apply as quickly as you discover that you are having difficulty obtaining health insurance coverage.
