Kaiser Permanente was founded in 1945 as a low cost, prepaid medical and hospitalization plan for several thousand workers. Over the years, Kaiser has expanded to become the largest nonprofit heath care and health insurance provider in the United States. Now, in 2010, Kaiser Permanente manages the health plans of 8.2 million members spread across 9 different states and the District of Columbia.
