Massachusett's May Mandate Electronic Medical Records by 2015
Massachusetts is proposing a $175 million injection of state subsidies to require the adoption of electronic medical records by all medical and healthcare providers. The plan calls for a full adoption of EMR, or "electronic medical records" by the year 2015.
Massachusetts is currently the only state in the union to require health insurance, and its health care legislation is widely considered among the most progressive in the country.
Massachusetts Health Care Plan Funding Options
The $175-million price tag of updating the records process seems to be an underestimate according to many industry insiders. The Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative told Mass High Tech that the state will need to provide around $500 million in order to cover the full costs of updating to EMR. In the meantime, the state plans to raise the extra cash through cigarette taxes, which is controversial in itself, but seems to be the only viable source of revenue.
