In the next ten years, the government will begin making cuts to the Medicare Advantage program. Beginning around 2011, $132 billion in Medicare Advantage’s extra benefits will experience cut backs, making the program more comparable to traditional Medicare.
The Medicare program will expand to offer free annual preventative check-ups for seniors.
Prescription Drugs, the Donut Hole, and Health Reform
By 2020, prescription drugs will become more affordable to seniors on Medicare when the coverage gap in prescription drug coverage, known as the “donut hole,” will be covered. This gap is referred to as the donut hole because after an individual spends $2,700 on prescription drugs there coverage stops and does not resume until they have spent $6,154.

Beginning in 2010, individuals in the donut hole will receive $250 from the government to use toward prescription drug expenses. By 2020, the government will pay 75% of prescription drug costs for seniors in the donut hole.
