Family Medical Coverage in Mississippi (MS)
- Group Health Insurance (HMO, PPO, POS, or HSA network) - A group plan may cost less than and individual policy, though some the rates vary between the different forms of group health policies. Make sure you know the difference between the different group plans before making your decision.
- Individual Health Insurance - Can be convenient if you wish to have more choice over the type of plan you get. Can be a bit more costly that n group health insurance and must be purchased by a private insurance carrier.
Mississippi Health Coverage for Individuals (MS)
Individuals have much the same options as do families in their choice of health insurance. If your employer offers a group health plan, than you may want to apply for an HMO or PPO. If you are unable to get a group health policy, than in individual health insurance is most likely your way to go. An individual plan can serve you well if you have specific health needs or prefer a certain doctor who is not covered under a group plan. Keep in mind that Mississippi state law does not limit individual providers from limiting or denying you individual coverage, whereas group health policies are not allowed to discriminate.

The Mississippi Comprehensive Health Insurance Risk Pool Association is not an insurance company. It was created as a non profit legal unit to allow citizens of the state of Mississippi access to health insurance they might otherwise go without. Citizens, through the Mississippi Comprehensive Health Insurance Risk Pool Association Act, are assured health insurance. Those eligible for coverage must have an automatically rejectable preexisting health condition or been rejected by a licensed health insurance company within 12 months of applying to the Mississippi Comprehensive Health Insurance Risk Pool Association. Prior to application, the individual must have been a resident of Mississippi for at least six months. People eligible for Medicare, Medicaid or health care benefits under a state or federal program are not eligible for the Mississippi Comprehensive Health Insurance Risk Pool Association. Anyone who has similar coverage under another health care plan is also not eligible.

The Mississippi Department of Insurance has a few tips for people trying to get insurance with preexisting conditions. A health insurance company that offers a "one time offer" or has an extreme sense of urgency may not be a creditable company. Unusually low premiums below the average price for comparable health insurance on the market should be another warning sign that this company may not be what they seem. Promises of generous benefits and a large network of physicians can be "too good to be true".
If the plan has very few limitations, beware. With the exception of the Mississippi Comprehensive Health Insurance Risk Pool, most health insurance has definite limits on the preexisting conditions they will accept.
Final Word
Beware of any health insurance representative who is evasive when questioned about preexisting conditions or requires a deposit at the application process.
