New Parents and Health Insurance
New parents usually have to re-organize their health insurance programs when a new little life enters their family, and there are a number of complications that this little bundle of joy can bring to the process.
Switching to a Family Plan
Couples who have not yet had children may not have a family health care plan. They may have two individual plans. But once a baby is born into the family, it will need a health insurance plan. Instead of purchasing another individual plan, many families find this to be an opportune time to switch from a handful of individual health insurance plans to a family plan that covers everyone in the family.

Re-qualifying for Health Insurance
If new parents wish to purchase a family health insurance plan once their new baby is born, they may have to go through a re-qualification process. Some health insurance providers do not require their clients to re-qualify for insurance if they choose to switch health plans, but many do. And if a couple chooses to switch companies when they apply for a family health insurance plan, they will most definitely have to re-qualify for health insurance.
New parents may find that their health insurance rates could increase if they have to re-qualify. Qualification for health insurance rates and coverage is based on a person’s age, gender, state of health, health history, and health lifestyle. If one applies for a health insurance policy when she is 21, a non-smoker, and has no health conditions, she will receive good rates. But if she applies again when she is older, smokes, and has had a few health problems, her rates will be higher and certain afflictions may not be covered in her new policy. Higher rates can be difficult for new parents to accommodate when they have a new baby that also needs a health insurance policy.
Bringing a baby into the world can be an exciting time for new parents, but it is a stressful one too. But with a little research you can find a health insurance program that covers your whole family, new baby and all.
