According to a Time Magazine poll in 2009, 80% of Americans believed insurance companies should be required to cover all individuals, regardless of the preexisting condition. In fact, 9 out of the 10 most common medical conditions inflicting Americans are considered preexisting by insurance companies.
Insurance Companies No Longer Allowed to Deny Coverage
Beginning September 2010, insurance companies will no longer be able to deny children under age 18 coverage because of preexisting conditions. Then in January 2014, the health care law prohibits insurance companies from denying insurance to all individuals with preexisting conditions.

In the meantime, adults with preexisting conditions are eligible to enter a temporary high-risk insurance pool where they receive subsidies that help pay for insurance premiums. This helps keep annual out-of-pocket costs at a minimum and caps expenses at $5,950 for individuals and $11,900 for families. The high-risk insurance pool will last until 2014, when it becomes against the law to deny anyone coverage because of preexisting conditions.
