The National Committee for Quality Assurance and U.S. News have worked together to create a ranked listing of various healthcare plans. As with anything these days, cost plays a major part in deciding on which healthcare plan you’ll likely go with. The hard part is being able to get a level of quality healthcare at an affordable price.
The list of rankings is available here, and it lists such criteria as customer service and ability to treat and prevent illness. A plan’s ability to diligently screen for cervical cancer using a Pap test was one of the 49 measures that each commercial healthcare plan needed to pass, with 39 measures needed to judge personal Medicaid plans.
Medicare plans were judged according to a list of 49 measures. One of the measures tested was how readily a caregiver handed out antibiotics for such ailments as the common cold. The withholding of antibiotics in these instances is a common practice that helps to contribute to the proliferation of drug-resistant viruses in our society.
Determining the Right Health Insurance Plan
You should consider whether or not a healthcare plan is right for your family based on some personal criteria as well. For instance, if you have infants or young children a healthcare plan that doesn’t work hard to keep immunizations current may not be the best cost-effective plan for your family. Likewise, if you have members of your family with diabetes conditions, a healthcare plan that doesn’t have a list of diabetes health programs may not be the best choice for your family.
It all boils down to balancing the necessary services being offered to your family against the costs associated with receiving those services. The 469 healthcare plans ranked in the survey, earned scores between zero and 100 with overall rankings of 1-5 stars. As with any ranking list, the results are merely for comparison with the final choice as to the ‘best healthcare plan’ being made by you.
